Hiking: Routes in the Sierra Helada (1)

All year

This is not a difficult trek, it is approximately 5 km there and back. The route begins in calle Hamburgo. At the end of Levante beach, there is a steep slope which finishes at the Hotel Benikaktus. Continue bordering the mountainous coastline until you come across some white and yellow signs to the left marked as the Castell de Mar (Sea Castle) which should follow in order to reach La Cruz. Continue until you reach a crossroads with two choices of direction:

  1. To the right, is the Punta Llisera look-out area and where the remains of an Ibero-Roman hamlet can still be seen. There is a staircase leading to the Cueva del Barbero (the Barber’s Cave).
  2. To the left, the road leads to the Punta de la Escaleta where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Sierra Helada cliffs from a 17th century watch tower.

Hiking: Routes in the Sierra Helada (2)

All year

This new itinerary will take you to La Cruz, an extremely pretty spot offering you wonderful views:

This route is catalogued as easy and takes about 3 hours to cover 5 km there and back.

Start the excursion at the Tourist Information Office at Rincón de Loix (between Avenida Derramador, s/n and C/Gerona). From this point, go up the Mountain via C/Gerona, and turn towards the beach along Avda. de L´Ametlla de Mar. At this point you can choose from two directions:

  1. The first option is to go from Calle Berlin (an extension of Avda. Mediterráneo) towards the crossroads and 0turn right towards the Sierra Dorada Apartments.
  2. The second choice is to go up Calle Hamburgo and turn left at the first crossroads towards Castell de Mar where you will join up with the previous route.

From this point, start the ascent which offers the most incredible views over the whole coastline. At a certain point along the way, you can go off towards the right which leads to an observation area and from there you can admire the wonderful panoramic views of the cliffs. Alternatively, you can keep going to the left, where at the end of the road you take a little path leading to La Cruz.

Hiking: Routes in the Sierra Helada (3)

All year

This trip is more difficult and will test your fitness levels in spite of being rated as easy – moderate. The trek lasts between 3 ½ to 4 hours just one way, covering approximately 8 km, with sloping ground of approximately 400 m.

The degree of difficulty here is due to the nearby cliffs and the lack of fountains, which means you should carry plenty of water on the trek. We recommend you use the signposted route as the alternative, more difficult to follow paths may not be clearly marked.

Starting from La Cruz (as in Route 2), the path is clearly marked in white and yellow, you will have to be alert so as not to lose the path as it can either run on top of the rocks or among the vegetation where halfway through the trail you can rest at a flat area and will have views of the Mitjana Island and the Peñas de Arabí. Going past some ruins located on one of the heights, you will head along a path that will take you towards a TV relay station.

About 50 m before the access gate, follow the path down to the left and parallel to the electricity poles and towards Albir. The path turns off to the right through a small forest to later rejoin the line of cables.

The journey ends on the road leading to the Albir Lighthouse, precisely in the picnic area set up by the Alfaz de Pi Town Council. From here, you can reach Albir and start the journey home again.

Hiking: Routes in the Sierra Helada (4)

All year

The difficulty of this trek is low-medium and it lasts approximately 2 hours.

It commences at the Conde de Alfaz Castle or Trinquet Marina Baixa. As you make your way up the path leading to the quarry you will find on your left a tarmacked track that goes up a long steep slope towards the mountain summit where the TV relay station is located. This is the highest point of the Sierra Helada and the view is extremely impressive.

In case you do not want to go down the same route, you can make a round turn and go along the TV relay station path to the Albir picnic area (mentioned above in Route 3).

Hiking: Routes in the Sierra Helada (5)

All year

This route is rated low-medium in difficulty, lasts 2 hours and has a sloping ground of approximately 200 m.

The route starts at the TV relay station already mentioned in previous routes. From there you can proceed towards the water treatment plant and take the path that goes towards the right.

Go up the path leading to the highest point of the plant and from there continue on the track leading to the cave.

This cave was a former meeting place for pilgrims who came here to eat the typical mona de Pascua (Easter pastry).

Hiking: Routes in the Sierra Helada (6)

All year

This route has an approximate duration of 2 hours and is rated as low difficulty.
