History
In Tossal de la Cala, there is an archaeological site from an Iberian settlement dating back to the 3rd and 1st centuries BC. This settlement's main economic activity was fishing, as indicated by the remains of fishing nets that have been discovered there. The Phoenician-Carthaginian culture had a considerable influence on the Iberians as revealed by the beautiful terracotta head of the Punic goddess Demeter-Ceres (better known as Tanit). The Romans also left traces of their rule in this area at the ruins of the Roman villa in the Partida del Moralet. Evidence of their presence has also been discovered in the form of fragments of Punic and Roman ships wrecked in the bay of Benidorm.
